Booster Heater

hi, folks.

cold patch seems to be settlin here in pendle. (east lancs.)

ive noticed that my booster heater has been kicking in recently, as i can hear the jet engine whine. my understanding is that it should cut out if the outside temp rises to above 11 or so degress and if/when the coolant temp reaches 75 C .

ive noticed that on a few occasions the booster heater has still been running when the coolant temp has reached 90 c. last week i drove home from manchester - approx 40 miles. and the heater was still whining merrily away - outside temp was 9 c , coolant temp 90 c.

whats the chances of the coolant temp sensor being faulty, if so where abouts is it located.

ps. if it is faulty am i getting faulty readings on the temp gauge. 90 c seems to be the normal operating temp. on long journeys.

 

ps. why too does it take a couple of mins to kick in sometimes?

whilst outside temp is low enough it will stay on - they are two levels of operation abot 2kW and about 5kW depending on heater version fitted - will go ito low power mode when engine temp reaches 75 ish -but it still runs :)

How do you know the coolant temp was 90 degrees ?

straight up on the temp gauge is supposedly 90c coolant temp

Fuel consumption : HIGH Output @ 5KW = 0.62litres/hr :blink:

LOW Output @ 2.2KW = 0.27litres/hr :blink:

 

 

This now helps to explain why in the last month as temps have dropped I'm struggling to get 520miles from a tank of diesel when I normally achieve 630miles!!!

how much of a tank do you mean ??

 

since we have an auto our fuel econonmy is not great but for the last 3 weeks we have driven everywhere we can at 55-60 mph and just got 635miles from 'see the diesel in the filler tube' to 'bing' - please refuel which I was quite pleased about. !

a fill up for me is usually 60litres, so about 47MPG. Currently struggling to make 40MPG.

Guys a note on Fuel economy !

 

Remember in the winter your lights are on more, your heater blower is on more, your front and rear heated windscreens and mirror heaters and possibly heated seats are on more.

The power for all this comes from the engine and therefore consumes extra fuel to do this.

 

Also it is cold and therefore you may be running in a lower gear more often to warm the engine up quicker.

 

And more importantly your basic driving habits change and this has an even greater impact on fuel economy.

 

All these are going to impact on economy more than the booster heater.

 

p.s. slightly of topic, Automatics tend to get better fuel economy than Manuals.

Yes this is true as drivers of automatics tend to drive more sedately than manual drivers ( with the odd exception, you know who you are ! )
